A key aspect of my culture work includes organising and curating and managing art events, film screenings and art exhibitions for artists and art organisations in Nigeria.

Curatorial Assistant, Body Blue and Beyond

In September of 2023, Nigerian Art Historian Peju Layiwola opened the doors to her solo exhibition on the sartorial traditions and textile and indigo dyeing processes in Southwestern Nigeria—Body, Blue and Beyond. The exhibition included a two-month long planning period with fieldtrips to dye villages and artisans in Abeokuta and Ibadan.

As her curatorial assistant, I:

  1. Engaging in field projects with textile artists in Abeokuta, Ibadan, and Lagos, Nigeria, for fabric purchases as well as the production and storage of audiovisual and text documents of artisan interviews, historical locations, and textile production materials integral to the exhibition's setup.
  2. Assisted curator with all operational and logistic duties, including venue sourcing and set-up, vendor management, artisan coordination and management, purchases, and transportation.
  3. Oversaw communications for the exhibition. This included handling communications between the exhibition's partners and notable guests, writing newsletters, managing the exhibition's booking and seat reservation suite, editing and proofreading all press releases and promotional website articles.

Curator, Sembene Across Africa (Lagos)

Sembene Across Africa is an initiative dedicated to celebrating the life and work of Ousmane Sembene—the "father of African cinema"— through annual screenings held simultaneously across the continent. The events, funded by La Societe des Amis de Mongo Beti through small donations, are curated by independent groups and curators across the continent.

In September of 2022, I received a nomination from La Societe des Amigos de Mongo Beti (through Bergeline Dormou and Uchenna Emelife) to host the Lagos event that year. As curator, I:

  1. Managed budgeting, rentals, newsletter writing, event promotion, guest follow-up and experiential design.
  2. Secured a partnership with No Parking Lagos, the gallery arm of June Creative Art Advisory to host the screening in their space.
